Helgi Maki

Helgi Maki is a groundbreaking advocate for trauma-informed practices, speaker, professional executive coach and author. She is also a legal innovation consultant and researcher, the focus of her work being to apply resilience tools to navigate adversity and uncertainty.

A lawyer by training with 15 years of practice at a “big law” firm in Toronto, Ontario, a series of sudden losses inspired her to dig deeper and find a way to align her work with her experiences with adversity. Helgi has been a pioneer for trauma-informed advocacy to improve access to justice and reduce harm.

Her work on trauma-informed lawyering has been featured in the Canadian Supreme Court Law Review and the Adverse Childhood Experiences conference series convened by California Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke Harris.

She created traumainformedlaw.org to serve as a collaborative knowledge base for trauma-informed legal practice principles and tools. She is the author of “Trauma-Informed Law: A Primer for Lawyers in Practice”, a collaborative book with an insightful group of lawyers published in March 2023 by the American Bar Association.
